Having a backup option for energy could mean a comfortable evening with your family versus your food spoiling, not having clean drinking water, and not having working lights.
"Does solar work in a blackout?" It's a common question we here. On some level, yes it does: When the power grid goes down, your solar panels do continue to produce energy… but that’s it. You won’t be able to access that power unless you have an emergency power outlet function or a solar battery backup.
As a safety feature, when the power grid goes down, a solar system’s inverter shuts off to prevent extra power being fed back into the grid. It’s to protect the utility workers who service a power grid’s lines when trying to get power to turn back on.
So even though you have a source of power, you won’t be able to access it unless you take some special steps…
This is where products like the LG Chem come in. Battery backups certainly have their pros and cons, but if you live in an area that frequently loses power, there’s no argument that they can really help in the event of a blackout.
Another option is to take a look at the new inverters we’ve been installing over the last couple of years. New technology features a secure power supply (SPS) that can connect to an external socket outlet and provide a sufficient amount of power for critical loads in the event of a grid outage. It’s a new development that can help keep power flowing to your home or business.
Having power during a blackout is better than not having power. Anyone can agree with that. However, it’s up to you to decide how valuable that is to you and your family. Going a day or two without power isn’t great, but it’s manageable. Going a week without power… that’s pretty unbearable.
