Every day you hear about a new technology that’s out. Upgraded smartphones, self-driving cars, even robot Walmart greeters. We’re constantly improving. One technology that’s continuing to develop? Photovoltaics. Although the first solar panel was developed in 1954, It’s a relatively new market, and it’s always improving. With new PV technology coming out all the time, you might be wondering: Should I wait to get PV panels?
It’s true that photovoltaics are alway improving. Seemingly every day, you hear about a more efficient solar panel that’s out. You hold off on investing in solar because you think, “Newer systems are being produced all the time. Shouldn’t I just wait for the next upgraded module?” Well here’s the short answer: No!
Something a lot of people don’t realize is that PV technology is only increasing incrementally. It’s a common misconception that it’s improving by leaps and bounds. It’s not. Now, don’t get us wrong. Here at Superior Solar, the tiny improvements being made to solar technology is the greatest thing since sliced bread. We’re not joking when we say that hearing a module improve by 0.1% is exciting! But these new solar modules are only slightly more efficient than their predecessors. There’s no getting around that.
Another thing people often don’t realize is that these new PV panels are very expensive. Waiting to invest in solar because you’re waiting for the new solar technology just doesn’t make sense financially; you’ll have to wait 20 years, 30, maybe even more, before the modules that are just now coming out are priced down enough to become a financially-sound expenditure. Yes, they’re technically more efficient, but only slightly so, and they come at a huge cost.
Alternatively, the solar modules on the market right now are priced low enough so that the return on investment will supersede the initial price of the system. Solar electricity is now cheaper than traditional electricity from most utilities. Solar systems you can get right now are fiscally viable. The new technology is not.
